SAKATAT
Bir Devrin Sonu
CD
Not only is Turkey a delicious bird, whose orifices I enjoy fist fucking with stuffing during the holidays, or just for something to do on a lazy Friday night, its also home to ferocious, old school grindcore act Sakatat. Like Singapores Wormrot, the band plays as a trio and are heavily influenced by the early recordings of Napalm Death. The bands debut full length, titled Bir Devrin Sonu, consists of a whopping 8 tracks thats over in 8 minutes and 5 seconds. I spend more time offering the sacrifice of a brown loaf to the porcelain god in the morning, than Sakatat have spent recording their music, but I digress. Bir Devrin Sonus tracks are obviously typically grindcore length, ranging from 17 seconds to just shy of 2 minutes. While Napalm Death are a clear and obvious influence to Sakatats music, with the shrieking, shredding and blasting going on throughout, but comparisons can also be made to S.O.B., Agathocles and Flagitious Idiosyncrasy in the Dilapidation. Not so much in terms of songwriting, but they play with a similar intensity during the musics most frenzied moments. The riffs are short, sharp and blazing. The drumming is like a hailstorm hitting a drum kit, and the vocals are like the shrieks of an inmate getting both stabbed and sodomized in a prison shower. The songwriting is entertaining, though hardly breaks new ground. The production is pretty clean for grindcore, despite the bands raw style. You can make everything out clearly and it sounds pretty fucking heavy. While Sakatats Bir Devrin Sonu isnt the finest example of grindcore ever recorded, its a damn fine addition to any grind aficionados collection. Its fast, violent and loud, I just wish it was a lot longer. At least Wormrots full lengths were 18 and 21 minutes long.
